The Dangers of Using Salt as an Ice Melt

Using salt, such as table salt or rock salt among others, to prevent or melt ice is not a good idea and here's why...

Salt will pollute the surrounding soil. Salt can destroy your soil health by ruining the soil structure, raising the pH, and hindering the soil's ability to absorb water and air. This results in soil that is toxic to plants. It will also kill the beneficial microbes and fungi normally found in healthy soil. Salt can remain in the soil for years. Yes, years. It is difficult to remove and remediate. Keep this in mind when deciding what to apply when winter weather is in the forecast. In ancient times, salt was used in warfare. A conquering army would spread salt on the land to render the soil lifeless. [No farms. No food.] Salt can turn your soil into a dead zone.

Salts, such as table salt or rock salt can make your soil a toxic wasteland

What are better options?

• Choose eco-friendly types of ice melt* (more on that below)

• Apply it sparingly (read the label, and don't go overboard)

• Take care to keep it only on surfaces like stairs and driveways

• Avoid applying it to soil

• As soon as the ice event passes, rinse it off, but try to be mindful of where the water runoff is headed.

*Magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are options that are less harmful to plants; however, over-application can still be detrimental. So always follow the recommended application rate listed on the package. They work well at lower temperatures and are less corrosive to concrete.

Calcium magnesium acetate (CMA) is another plant-safe alternative. CMA is biodegradable, non-corrosive, and does not harm plants or soil. It works by preventing ice from bonding to surfaces rather than melting it, making it an eco-friendly choice.
